What is a Deposit Bonus?
A deposit bonus is a promotion where a bookmaker matches a portion of your deposit with bonus funds. Deposit $100, get $100 in bonus bets. Deposit $500, get a $250 bet credit. The ratio and cap vary by bookmaker and offer, but the structure is always the same: real money in, bonus funds credited on top.
Deposit bonuses in Australia look different to those in the UK or US because of local advertising rules. Under the 2018 amendments to the Interactive Gambling Act, bookmakers cannot publicly advertise inducements to open an account or deposit — but they can still offer them to existing customers through direct communication. As a result, most Australian deposit bonuses appear as targeted offers: via email, SMS, push notifications, or the logged-in promotions page.
The bonus funds credited from a deposit bonus are almost always bonus bets rather than cash. That's a critical distinction. $100 in 'bonus funds' is not $100 in your account — it's $100 of stake-not-returned credit that must be wagered on specific markets and only returns profit, not stake. The actual cash value depends entirely on how efficiently you can convert that credit, typically 60–80% through matched betting.
Watch for turnover or wagering requirements. Some deposit bonuses require the deposit itself, not just the bonus, to be wagered one or more times before withdrawal. Others apply turnover to the bonus only. The terms and conditions are where the real value of the offer sits — a 100% deposit match with 10x turnover at minimum odds of $1.50 is significantly less valuable than a 50% match with 1x turnover.
The matched betting approach applies the same way it does to any bonus bet. Use the bonus portion on one side of a market, hedge the opposite side at another bookmaker or on an exchange, and lock in a calculable percentage of the bonus as cash. Our Conversion Finder handles the maths automatically across every active Australian deposit bonus.
Ongoing deposit bonuses — targeted at existing customers around major events, long weekends, or to reactivate dormant accounts — are one of the largest sources of recurring income for long-term matched bettors in Australia. Signup bonuses eventually run out. Ongoing deposit offers don't.
